About the Book

Is Failing to Fail only for trade contractors?

No. The uniform changes; the system doesn't. Tim uses the language of the trades because he lived there for 30 years. But a marketing agency owner, a restaurant operator, or a solo consultant carries the same backpack of unprocessed failures. The BUILD Protocol works in any business where people make decisions and sometimes get them wrong. That's every business.

What is the BUILD Protocol?

The five-step method at the core of the book: REWIRE, EXTRACT, VALIDATE, ENCODE, EXECUTE. It turns a setback into data, pulls the lesson out, tests it with outside eyes, writes it into a field protocol, and puts it to work so the same mistake doesn't cost you twice.

I've been in business for 25 years. Is this relevant to me?

It's most relevant to you. You've paid more tuition than anyone in the room. You just haven't collected the degree. Decades of unprocessed failures are the richest raw material in the building.

I'm just starting out. Is it too early?

It's the best time. Most people wait for the catastrophe before they build systems. You can build them first. Every small brick you process now compounds for decades.

You used AI to help write this. Is the content really yours?

Every system, story, failure, and scar in this book is Tim's. AI helped structure and edit, the way a musician uses a studio. The song is still theirs. Tim is open about it because AI is a force multiplier, not a replacement for real experience.

Putting It to Work

What's the difference between a POG and an SOP?

An SOP tells your team how to do the work. A POG tells you what to do when everything goes sideways. You build the POG first, test it under real pressure, and refine it. Once it's proven, it earns its place as an SOP your team can run. The POG is the R&D lab. The SOP is what comes out the other end.

What if the protocol I build doesn't work?

That's not failure. That's Version 1.0 doing its job. Every protocol is built to be tested and refined. When one breaks, run the 15-Minute Interrogation on the protocol itself, pull new takeaways, and build Version 2.0. Some of Tim's best systems are on version 12.8.

Things are on fire. I don't have 15 minutes. What do I do?

That's exactly when you need it most. Under pressure, your gauges are off and gut calls get expensive. The 15-Minute Interrogation doesn't slow you down. It keeps you from making the same costly mistake twice. Set the timer. Five questions. The fire will still be there, but you'll fight it with data instead of adrenaline.

How do I bring this to my team without pushback?

Lead with consequences of keeping this path, not process. Don't hand them a document on Monday morning. Start with the problem costing them the most in their day, show the dollar cost, and let them help build the fix. When the team builds the protocol, they own it. When they own it, they run it.

Does it work for personal failures too?

Yes. Every worksheet in the book has a personal note for that reason. The 15-Minute Interrogation doesn't care if the failure was a bad hire or a hard season at home. The brick is the brick.

What does the BUILD Protocol NOT do?

It doesn't eliminate failure. Nothing does. It isn't motivation; motivation fades. It's an engineering system, and it only works if you run it. It also doesn't replace medical, mental health, legal, or financial advice.

When should I talk to a counselor instead?

The BUILD Protocol is an operational framework, not a mental health tool. If what you're carrying affects your sleep, your relationships, or your ability to function, get professional help first. Tim did, and the book is open about it. If you're in crisis in the U.S., call or text 988.
